Kids Chiropractic

Kids have spines too! As with most health challenges, the earlier treatment is given then the better chance of a healthy outcome. The chiropractic scope of practice includes the care of children and childhood is where many adult pain syndromes begin.

Think about it, from birth to poor sleeping posture (such as front-sleeping,) playground falls, sporting injuries and slouching at a desk in school. Our clinical observation is that very few spines reach the age of twenty without five to six significant traumas putting the spine out of normal function or alignment.

The long term consequences we know, from following whiplash cases for example, are premature degeneration or osteoarthritis. The short term consequences are numerous, from back pain, neck pain and headaches just the same as adults.

At LHCC family chiropractic care is encouraged so that everyone can experience the benefits of a healthy functioning spine and nervous system.

It is important to realise that chiropractic is not the treatment of any condition. The purpose of chiropractic is to find and reduce stress and interference to the nerve system, allowing the person to experience greater function and an overall improved quality of life. (ICPA)

Headaches

Before you take that painkilling pill for your headache or migraine, have you ever wondered what is causing it to be there in the first place and why it keeps coming back?

Headaches are one of the most frequent conditions seen in chiropractic clinics. Tension-type headaches account for nearly 90% of all headaches. (2)

One of the central goals of the chiropractor is to find and correct the underlying causes of your pain, symptoms and poor health. Pain is a good thing in some ways because it warns us that something is wrong in our body. Many headaches are referred pain from a spine that has been damaged or is not working properly.

The chiropractic approach is to locate find and correct abnormal function in the spine and support the new normal function with corrective exercises, postural advice and healthy lifestyle choices.

“Evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic (from the neck) headaches.”

“The results of this study support previous results showing that some people report significant improvement in migraines after chiropractic SMT.”

J Manipulative Physiol Ther2000;23:91–5

“There was an advantage for SMT (spinal manipulative therapy) over the control (group.) For the higher dose patients, the advantage was greater.”

The Spine Journal 2010 (Feb):   10 (2):   117-128

“For cervicogenic headache, spinal manipulation is recommended.”

JMPT, June 2011, Volume 34, Issue 5, Pages 274–289

“Several clinical trials indicate that spinal manipulation therapy may help treat migraine headaches. In one study of people with migraines, 22% of those who received chiropractic manipulation reported more than a 90% reduction of attacks. Also, 49% reported a significant reduction of the intensity of each migraine.”

“In another study, people with migraine headaches were randomly assigned to receive spinal manipulation, a daily medication (Elavil), or a combination of both. Spinal manipulation worked as well as Elavil in reducing migraines and had fewer side effects. Combining the two therapies didn’t work any better.”

“In addition, researchers reviewed 9 studies that tested chiropractic for tension or migraine headaches and found that it worked as well as medications in preventing these headaches.”

“A paper published in the International Headache Society’s journal Cephalagia in 2011 found that manual therapy was more effective in dealing with headaches than regular GP care when dealing with headaches. The study found that after a short course of manual therapy, three quarters of participants reported that the frequency of their tension type headaches had dropped by 50 per cent.”

Neck Pain

Around 25% of the average chiropractic practice is seeing patients with neck pain.

Neck pain is a common form of spinal pain often caused or aggravated by by poor posture, trauma, arthritis and emotional or mental tension.  Pain, aching and tension can come from muscles, joints, discs and pinched or irritated nerves or other soft tissues.  Only rarely is neck pain caused by a more serious problem.

image001Chiropractic care for the neck can reduce pain and inflammation, increase range of movement, relax supportive muscles and restore normal neck functioning.

Chiropractic is the science and art of applied anatomy which means that chiropractors understand from their training where structures should be and how they should work.  The process of retraining and rehabilitating these structures back to their normal function leads to a natural resolution of pain and symptoms.

Treatment involves a variety of techniques chosen according to a patient’s individual and age, body type, the presenting problems and their specific needs.

Research Quotes

“Chiropractic care improves symptoms in patients with neck pain, and was shown to influence brain pathways related to sympathetic nervous system relaxation and pain reduction.  Patients in the treatment group also reported reductions in stress and improvements in quality of life.”

– Altern Ther Health Med, 2011

“…patients suffering from back and/or neck complaints experience chiropractic care as an effective means of resolving or ameliorating pain and functional impairments, thus reinforcing previous results showing the benefits of chiropractic treatment for back and neck pain.”

– Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Verhoef et al. (1997)

“Statistically significant decreases in neck pain, arm pain and NDI scores were noted at one and three months compared with baseline scores” for patients with cervical (neck) disc herniations (CDH)undergoing spinal manipulative therapy.”

“Most patients in this study, including sub acute/chronic patients, with symptomatic magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed CDH treated with spinal manipulative therapy, reported significant improvement with no adverse events.”

– JMPT, 2013

“For elderly people with chronic neck pain, “spinal manipulative therapy with home exercise resulted in greater pain reduction after twelve weeks of treatment compared to both supervised plus home exercise, and home exercise alone.”

Back Pain

If you are suffering from back pain then chiropractic is the logical choice of treatment as chiropractors have been helping people with back pain since it was discovered well over 100 years ago.

Back pain is extremely common – about 80 percent of people are affected at some point in their lifetime. Anyone can get back pain at any age, but it’s more common in people over the age of 35.

To date the evidence has shown that chiropractic for back pain is remarkably safe, effective and cost-efficient.

Research Quotes

“There is strong evidence that manipulation is more effective than a placebo treatment for chronic low-back pain or than usual care by the general practitioner, bed rest, analgesics and massage.”
– Spine, Van Tulder and Bouter et al. (1997)

The following are excerpts from a few recent studies For Acute Low-Back Problems:
“For patients with acute low-back symptoms without radiculopathy, the scientific evidence suggests spinal manipulation is effective in reducing pain and perhaps speeding recovery within the first month of symptoms.”
– Clinical Practice Guidelines, AHCPR (1994)

“…for the management of low-back pain, chiropractic care is the most effective treatment, and it should be fully integrated into the government’s health care system.”
– The Manga Report (1993)

“…improvement in all patients at three years was about 29% more in those treated by chiropractors than in those treated by the hospitals. The beneficial effect of chiropractic on pain was particularly clear.”
– British Medical Journal, Meade et al. (1995)

“The overwhelming body of evidence” shows that chiropractic management of low-back pain is more cost-effective than medical management, and that “many medical therapies are of questionable validity or are clearly inadequate.”
– The Manga Report (1993)

Patient satisfaction is higher when treated for low back pain by chiropractors than by the established medical community.

The Manga Report (1993)

First contact chiropractic care for common low back conditions costs substantially less than traditional medical treatment and “deserves careful consideration” by managed care executives concerned with controlling health care spending.
