Tech Neck and Modern Family Life

Why More Families Are Experiencing Neck Pain, Headaches and Posture Problems Than Ever Before

Look around almost any café, classroom, waiting room or lounge room and you’ll see the same thing — heads bent forward over phones, tablets and laptops.

While technology has made life easier in many ways, it has also created a growing spinal health problem known as “Tech Neck” (sometimes called “Text Neck”).

At Logan Hyperdome Chiropractic Centre, we are seeing more children, teenagers, parents and office workers experiencing headaches, neck tension, shoulder tightness, fatigue and poor posture linked to prolonged device use. Many people are surprised to learn that even mild daily postural stress, repeated over months and years, can significantly affect the spine and nervous system.

According to the Australian Chiropractors Association, prolonged forward-head posture and non-ergonomic device use can progressively increase stress on the cervical spine and contribute to headaches, neck pain, upper back pain and postural changes.

What Exactly Is “Tech Neck”?

Your head weighs approximately 4–6 kilograms in a neutral upright posture. But as the head moves further forward and downward, the strain placed on the neck and upper back muscles increases dramatically.

Over time, this constant forward-head posture may contribute to:

    • Neck and shoulder tension
    • Headaches and migraines
    • Upper back pain and stiffness
    • Reduced mobility and flexibility
    • Poor posture and rounded shoulders
    • Fatigue and reduced concentration
    • Increased stress and muscular tension

Many parents are also noticing posture changes in children and teenagers who spend hours studying, gaming, scrolling or watching videos.

Studies show that students who spend prolonged time looking down at devices are more likely to experience neck and shoulder pain.

More Than Just a “Pain Problem”

What many people do not realise is that posture can affect far more than muscles and joints.

Poor posture may influence breathing patterns, energy levels, confidence, concentration and even stress responses. When the head drifts forward, the muscles of the neck, shoulders and upper back must work much harder simply to hold the body upright.

Over time this can create a cycle of tension, fatigue and spinal dysfunction that affects how people move, feel and function.

For children and teenagers especially, these postural habits often begin during key developmental years.

Small Daily Habits Matter

The good news is that prevention is often simple. Small changes repeated consistently can make a big difference.

Some of the most effective strategies include:

    • Holding devices closer to eye level
    • Taking regular movement and stretching breaks
    • Avoiding long periods looking down
    • Improving workstation ergonomics
    • Strengthening posture and core muscles
    • Encouraging outdoor activity and exercise
    • Maintaining good sitting posture during study and work

The ACA recommends regular movement breaks every 10 minutes when using mobile devices and every 30 minutes when using computers.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

At Logan Hyperdome Chiropractic Centre, our chiropractors assess posture, spinal movement, muscle tension and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to Tech Neck and related spinal stress.

Chiropractic care may help by:

    • Improving spinal movement and mobility
    • Reducing muscle tension and stiffness
    • Helping restore better posture awareness
    • Supporting healthy movement patterns
    • Providing advice on ergonomics, exercises and stretching
    • Helping families develop healthier spinal habits early

Importantly, we believe education is powerful. Helping people understand how everyday habits affect the spine often leads to long-term positive change.

A Healthier Relationship with Technology

Technology is not going away — and nor should it. The goal is not fear, but awareness.

Modern family life now involves screens for work, school, communication and entertainment. The key is learning how to use technology in ways that support, rather than gradually damage, spinal health.

Sometimes the biggest improvements come from the smallest daily changes.
