Health; Are You Interested or Committed?

fpicWhat does it take to be truly healthy?  Not just being without pain or symptoms, but to be feeling really alive and vital and full of energy? Interested?  Well if you are interested then that’s great.  But will you actually get healthy with that?  Very likely… no. Firstly what is healthy or, as we like to say in chiropractic, what is optimally healthy, as opposed to just average health. Health is a state within the body where all parts are functioning normally.  That means physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. Is that something you are just interested in and are thinking “Yeah, that would be nice”?  Well if average health is what you want, like most people, then that will be fine.  Unfortunately ‘most people’ have a chronic illness or two by the time they reach middle age.  Over 70% of ‘average’ people over seventy years old are on more than five medications a day. When someone is ‘interested’ in improving their health they tend to give up healthy habits during the tough times.  They also look for short-term answers to their long-term health problems. The first quality that really works in any long-term health plan is committment.  When you are committed to your health you make no excuses, you want results.  For example, if your healing has plateaued around 70% better with your chiropractic adjustments, then, if you are committed, you will examine all other areas of your life and put them into alignment. You will start a new exercise (see next Advanced Workshop).  Or you will learn how to relax and de-stress (get a meditation or breathing CD from the front desk).

Paul’s Health Gets Back on Track

Hello my name is Paul.  I am 9 years old.  For the past couple of years I have had a lot of problems. I could not sit still or concentrate.  Reading was almost impossible.  I was always whinging and cranky which made life unbearable for my family. I suffered badly from headache, eczema and other skin allergies and I hated eating as I always felt sick. My parents took me to so many doctors and specialists but they all just wanted to give me drugs. My mother made an appointment with the chiropractor and he found I was suffering from vertebral subluxation. I have been receiving treatment for the past six months and with my special diet I have improved greatly at school, lost my eczema and allergy problems, do not have to wear glasses any more and am finally eating better and gaining weight as I don’t feel sick or have any headaches.  Paul H. What Is Health?

Health is a state within the body where all parts are functioning normally, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Dorlands Medical Dictionary. Take a moment now to look at the parts of your life and give each part a score out of ten. To make this exercise more specific you can also score the health of your work, your recreation time and your relationships. Often one area will stand out as needing attention and this is an ideal place to begin realigning and ‘healing’. Make a list of action steps to do (and even note the things you must stop doing) and begin taking those steps right now!

This newsletter covers two months due to the shift in workload with Dr Heath’s broken foot. We can report that his healing is progressing well and as a result we have cancelled the special workshop on extreme sports…just joking!! “Exercise, in all its Shapes and Forms”, is the topic for the April 21st Advanced Healing Workshop, 7-8pm. Along with nutrition this is the second most important area to focus on after chiropractic adjustments. From a flexibility point of view your adjustments get your spine moving and exercise keep it moving. Exercise gives you and your body so many important advantages in life such as muscle and tissue tone, optimal blood circulation, and mental and physical stress release. In this workshop we cover the most vital specific exercises for the spine that keep it resilient, that is to say strong as well as flexible. We will also go into general exercise principles and the best and safest exercises for you.
